Kindness Prevails: Day 12

Today, I’m thankful for podcasts. I know this seems super random, but I’ve been on a podcast kick lately and it’s been great, so bear with me.

I’ve always loved a good story, thanks to the journalism major in me. I enjoy learning about other people’s experiences and perspectives different than those of my own. If you read yesterday’s post about “Third Culture Kids” you will have gathered where my fascination with different cultures and places comes from.

I first got hooked on podcasts after a long road trip from Louisiana to North Carolina, during which my mom and I listened to episodes of This American Life and Freakonomics, two popular series, for 12 hours straight. It was also so much more bearable than listening to the same 10 songs on the radio, over and over again 🙂

Now, I listen to podcasts while walking to and from class, while I fold my laundry, before I go to bed etc. I have podcasts that I like for different occasions:

Modern Love, for something more lighthearted (sometimes emotional!).

This American Life, for an in-depth, documentary style piece.

Freakonomics, to learn “the hidden side of everything”.

And of course Serial, where the hype all began.

I guess what I’ve concluded here is that I’m thankful for good storytelling- for journalists who put in effort, risk-taking and time to expose people’s unique stories and give a voice to those who tend to go unnoticed.

When’s the last time you read, watched, or listened to, a really good story? A new perspective?

Happy listening!
